A business corporate entity like
ours gets various inputs from the society we live in, adds value to
these and offers the needed products and services to the public at
large. The profit we make is the appreciation by the public for the
value added.
CSR aims at supplementing the government endeavors to help the citizens
of the country to lead a healthier, happier & more meaningful life.
Governments alone are not able to do the needful to the extent needed.
That's where our role as good corporate citizens comes in. More so, when
both our inputs and outputs come from society and go back to the society
. In fact, in the long run this way we are also helping ourselves.
Three major initiatives were undertaken, 2004 onwards, as per
deliberations in the Central HRD Committee, presided over by Shri Hari
Shankar Singhania, where all Presidents & Whole time Directors are
members.
ADULT LITERACY

In
1950 both China & India were at the same level i.e. at about 18%
literacy rate. It is difficult to visualize a society making scientific
progress, its citizens leading healthy & meaningful lives, being
able to defend the land they live in from foreign aggression etc ; with
so huge a population being illiterate. No doubt, there has been some
progress on this front. China today has crossed 95% level and we are
stuck at around 65%. Is that good enough? Certainly not.
J K Group initiative, starting Dec 2007, has enabled about 3868 of our
citizens to become literate.
Today, another 944 are participating in learning sessions at 34 groups
at 10 different locations, as indicated below, in six local languages -
viz.
Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Oriya, Gujarati & Hindi, under
the guidance of our plants' local management.
J K Tyre [ Banmore nr. Gwalior, Vikrant in Mysore], J K paper [Rayagada
in Orissa & Central Pulp Mills at Songadh in Gujarat], Lakshmi
Cement in Sirohi Rajasthan, J K sugar nr. Barielly, Fenner [ Hyderabad &
Madurai], J K agri in Hyderabad.. Kankroli is going to be the 10th
location.
AT most locations we use software developed by M/s TCS, for the
purpose.
