Saftey Measures

Tyre changing can be dangerous, and should be done by trained personnel using proper tools and procedures. Improper changing of tyre may lead to serious injury or even death. Each and every item needs to be handled with utmost caution.
Rim
  • Ensure that rim is approved for the tyre size in use and its corresponding inflation pressure.
  • Check the rim for cracks, fatigue failure and ovality of stud holes. The valve-hole edges should be free from any burr that may damage the valve.
  • Remove all dirt, grease, rust etc. From the rim. Never use a rim that has been bent, pitted from corrosion, cracked or worn.
  • Never rework, weld, heat or braze the rim of a tyre/wheel/rim assembly while the tyre contains inflation pressure.
  • Never hammer or strike on any type of tyre/rim assembly while the tyre contains inflation pressure.

Wheel
  • Wheel disc must not be distorted or fractured and also should be free from any foreign matter, dirt, rust etc.
  • Threads of studs and nuts should be clean and free from any damage.
  • Ensure that the wheel nuts run freely on stud threads or wheel bolts in the hub assembly. Studs must correctly seat into the hub.
  • During fixing the rim on the wheel disc do not fully tighten one nut alone while others are loose. Nuts and bolts must be regularly checked for tightness.

Tyre
  • Always inspect the inside of the tyre for any foreign matter, loose cords, cuts etc. before mounting. Carcass damages should be repaired. If irreparable the tyre must be discarded.
  • Lubricate the tyre beads and rim flanges while mounting or demounting a tyre with a thin solution of a vegetable oil soap or any recommended lubricant. Never use any petroleum - based hydrocarbon lubricant or silicones.
  • After mounting the tyre on the rim and ensuring that the beads are correctly located ;inflation of the tyre for proper bead seating must not exceed 240 kpa (35 psi ). Higher inflation may break the beads or rim with explosive force. If the beads do not get seated; deflate the tyre, recentre the tyre, relubricate the beads and rim and reinflate the tyre. Adjust the pressure to that required for the operation.
  • Never reinflate a tyre that has been operated in run - flat or underinflated condition ( 80% or less of recommended pressure ) without checking both the tyre and the tube for damage.
  • Never stand directly in front of a tyre while inflating it. Stay away from the trajectory of any flying parts due to an explosion. It is always better to place the tyre in a cage or fixing the tyre / rim assembly in a restraining device while inflating.

Tube
  • Always use new tubes with a new tyre.
  • Never use a tube that has been buckled or creased.
  • Always inspect the valve - cores for air leakages and replace if necessary.
  • Always use sealing valve - caps to prevent loss of air or fluid.
  • Never pull out a tube by holding the valve - stem.
  • Avoid pinching of the tube by the tools while mounting and demounting.
Mounting of a tyre
  1. Clean the rim with a wire - brush. The rim should be free from any foreign matter, dirt, rust etc. Tyre and tube should be completely dry. No foreign matter should be there between the tyre and tube.
  2. Lay the rim on the floor with the valve side on top.
  3. Lubricate the tyre bead area, tube base and top rim flange using a thin solution of vegetable oil soap or any approved lubricant. Do not use any petroleum-based hydrocarbon lubricant or silicones.
  4. Place the tyre on the rim. Ensure that the tyre is being mounted in such a manner that when fixed on the vehicle it will rotate in the direction as indicated by the arrow moulded on the sidewall. Push the bottom bead over the rim flange as far as possible. Then using tyre levers force the rest completely over the rim flange.
  5. Insert the tube into the tyre casing with the valve in line with the valve-hole of the rim. Pass the valve through the valve-hole and tighten the nut on the valve-stem to hold it in position.
  6. Use tyre levers to work the top-bead area opposite to the valve over the rim flange. Stepwise proceed until the total top bead is passed over the rim flange. Be careful not to pinch the tube with the tyre levers.
  7. Center the tyre on the rim with the help of the rim centering lines moulded on the sidewalls of the tyre. Inflate the tyre to seat the beads. Do not exceed 240 kpa. Ensure that both the beads are seated properly all around the tyre. If not, deflate and repeat.
  8. Finally to allow repositioning of the tube deflate completely by removing the valve-core. Then reinsert the valve-core and reinflate to the operating pressure. Fit the valve-cap.

Demounting of a tyre
  1. Remove the valve-core and deflate the tyre completely.
  2. Lay the tyre / rim assembly on the floor. Drive the bead unseating tool between the tyre bead and rim flange taking care not to damage the tyre bead area. After the bead has been released completely around the tyre, turn the assembly over and repeat the same to release the second bead off the other rim flange.
  3. Lubricate the rim flanges and the tyre using a thin solution of vegetable oil soap or any approved lubricant. Do not use any petroleum-based hydrocarbon lubricant or silicones.
  4. Keeping the valve-side of the tyre / rim assembly on the top push the part of the bead directly across the valve into the well. Using the tyre levers then force the bead in the valve area over the rim flange. Repeat step-by -step avoiding damage to the bead and tube until the top bead is completely over the rim flange.
  5. Keeping the assembly vertical pull the tube out of the tyre. Do not pull by holding the valve-stem.
  6. With one side of the second bead placed in the well of the rim, insert the tyre lever between the rim flange and the other side of the bead. Proceeding in steps force the rim completely out of the tyre.
