The increasing popularity of this Championship lead to Maruti Udyog, nation's largest automobile manufacturer & marketer and Caltex Lubricants to team up with JK Tyre to identify & promote motorsports in the nation through this Championship.

The Championship comprises of five rounds in two categories - Maruti Esteem & Formula Maruti (rechristened in 2001 from its earlier version of FISSME category), inviting several participants referred by motorsport clubs across the nation. The event is organized under the aegis of FMSCI in association with MMSC. The winner of the Championship gets sponsored pro-drive at Formula Asian Championship with Team JK Tyre…thus providing him international exposure & catapulting his career.
